Counter Revolutionary Egypt: From the Midan to the Neighborhood
The talk will present her upcoming book “Counter Revolutionary Egypt: From the Midan to the Neighborhood” (Routledge 2024). The book provides a reading of the affective and emotional dynamics of the 25 January 2011 Egyptian revolution and traces these dynamics into the local realities and everyday politics of Cairo´s urban poor. It seeks to explore what impact revolutionary participation had on protestors’ subsequent engagement in street politics through studying the affective experiences of the urban subaltern.

Do not recommend: Algorithmische Depriorisierung auf Social-Media-Plattformen
Manche Arten von Social-Media-Inhalten wie Fake News werden erst problematisch, sobald sie mithilfe von algorithmischer Amplifizierung eine größere Sichtbarkeit erreichen. Zunehmend werden solche Inhalte von den großen Plattformen nicht gelöscht, sondern in ihrer Reichweite eingeschränkt, damit sie weniger oft empfohlen werden. Dieser Lunchtalk stellt die ersten Ergebnisse eines Dissertationsprojekt vor, in denen öffentliche Angaben zu dieser Maßnahme von Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube und Twitter gesammelt und analysiert wurden.

Designing Culturally Sensitive ‚Domestic Violence‘ Trainings
In this lunchtalk I am going to introduce our project from the CERV (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values) programme, answering the call to prevent and combat gender based violence in Europe. For victims of DV (domestic violence), the medical sector is often their only chance for support. Since they often lack relevant DV training our project aims at the EU wide implementation of DV into the respective curricula. One major challenge thereby is how to address ‘culture‘ in this context of national training designs: How to move from ‘culturally neutral‘ to ‘culturally competent‘ service delivery in DV service (frontline responders)?

YouTube als Spielfeld linker Politik: Situationsanalyse der mediatisierten Welten von LeftTube/Breadtube
Social Media-Plattformen prägen die Interaktionen, die über ihre Benutzeroberflächen stattfinden und befördern je spezifische Formen des Austauschs. In diesen algorithmischen Umgebungen bilden sich mediatisierte soziale Welten rund um thematische Interessen und Identitätskonstruktionen, aber auch spezifische vernacular genres und Influencer-Figuren aus. Gegenstand des Vortrags ist eine explorative Fallstudie der YouTube-basierten Subkultur “LeftTube/BreadTube”, die sich primär via links-politisch orientierter Videos konstituiert.

Polarisierende Kommunikation als Parasit – Ein Erklärungsversuch aus Sicht der Organisationskommunikation
Fake News, Desinformation, Post Trust, Post Truth, Post Shame, Verschwörung, Geschwurbel, Bullshit … die Kommunikationswissenschaft überschlägt sich gerade mit Konzepten, die als Treiber öffentlicher Polarisierung angenommen werden. Dabei entgeht oftmals eines: Das zentrale Bezugsobjekt polarisierender Kommunikation ist gar nicht die Öffentlichkeit. Vielmehr sind es etablierte formale Organisationen, insbes. politische, wissenschaftliche und massenmediale Akteure. Aufbauend auf einem analytischen Dreischritt Serres‘, werden folgende Fragen diskutiert: Analyse: Wie erhält sich polarisierende Kommunikation aufrecht? Paralyse: Wie verunsichert polarisierende Kommunikation formale Organisationen? Katalyse: Wie kann ein produktiver Umgang mit polarisierender Kommunikation aussehen?

Brazilian fake news bill: How does it deal with speech, data and market power?
How should we deal with disinformation on digital platforms? Policymaking has centred so far on law proposals that tackle at least one of these three elements: speech, data and market power. In this presentation, I analyse to what extent these elements are present in the Brazilian fake news bill, proposed in 2022. I argue that it adopts the highest international standards with regard to speech regulation, but still lags behind concerning in approaching data and market power.

Articulating AI futures for Brazil: AI policy between technological solutionism, development and dependency
The presentation will discuss two recent policy documents released in Brazil: the Brazilian Strategy of Artificial Intelligence (EBIA) and the Fapesp Call for Applied AI Research Centers. I argue that, in Brazil, the idea that problems can find their ultimate resolution through technological innovation (in this case, AI innovation) is surrounded by a very specific concern: the one of backwardness or dependency, permeating both strategic documents, configuring funding strategies, setting the role of the state and that of other societal agents in a future with AI.
