Labour pains: content moderation challenges in Mastodon growth
After Elon Musk became the owner of Twitter/X, in October 2022, the number of monthly active users on the alternative social media platform Mastodon rose from 300,000 to 2.5 million. Relying on open and interoperable protocols, Mastodon adopts a different model of content moderation, on the level of the communities and exclusively by humans. But the post-Musk growth in users has posed challenges for this model. How did Mastodon communities handle it? Which challenges and which strategies were used to tackle them? Based on empirical data from communities all over the world, this presentation seeks to answer these questions and offer some insights for thinking growth-related challenges for content moderation.
